What is Dragon Boat racing? |
Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition over 2000 years old and is one of Britain's most competitive water sports. It's a great way to raise money and it's spectacular, colourful, exciting and fun! |
What is a Dragon Boat? |
Dragon boats are 40 feet in length and are propelled by crews of 16 paddlers, guided by a qualified helm and kept in rhythm by a drummer seated at one end. All equipment is provided, boats, paddles, life jackets etc. Each team is given safety instructions and a short practice before the races. The whole event is organised with safety in mind. |
Teams and Races |
Each team will race at least three times along a 250m course. The 12 fastest teams will then compete in the final. |
Fundraising |
Each team is to raise money through sponsorship. The target is £2000 per team, one third for Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper's charity fund and two thirds to the team's nominated charity. |
Side-events |
Throughout the day, there are side stalls, games, a barbecue, bar and fairground on the riverside. |
