Dragon Boat Day 2006

Sunday 14th May 2006, River Thames, Abingdon

The Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper's Dragon Boat Day is an annual fund raising event held alongside the River Thames in Abingdon (see below for directions).

What is Dragon Boat racing?
Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition over 2000 years old and is one of Britain's most competitive water sports. It's a great way to raise money and it's spectacular, colourful, exciting and fun!

What is a Dragon Boat?
Dragon boats are 40 feet in length and are propelled by crews of 16 paddlers, guided by a qualified helm and kept in rhythm by a drummer seated at one end.

Teams and Races
Each team will race at least three times along a 250m course. The 12 fastest teams will then compete in the final. New for 2006 is a ladies-only competition.

Fundraising
Each team is to raise money through sponsorship. The target is £2000 per team, one third for Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper's charity fund and two thirds to the team's nominated charity.

Side-events
Throughout the day, there are side stalls, games, a barbecue, bar and fairground on the riverside.
