Help for Asian Earthquake Victims

Thirty victims of the recent Asian Earthquake will receive shelter from the harsh Himalayan winter as a result of the generosity of Abingdon’s Waitrose shoppers.

On the Saturday following the earthquake, the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper organised a collection outside the store. On display were the contents of a Rotary Shelter Box which provides a dry shelter in the form of a large tent, warm bedding, light & heat, clean water, cooking aids and tools sufficient for ten people.

The total raised was £1,100 and this, together with a small additional donation from Abingdon Vesper’s own charity account, was enough to buy three Shelter Boxes which are already on their way to Pakistan, courtesy of Virgin Atlantic.

On behalf of the 30 people whose lives will undoubtedly be saved, Rotary would like to thank, not only the management of Waitrose who agreed to the collection at short notice, but mainly the shoppers who gave so generously.
